Science: New Plant Roots in Bulgaria

Society | August 4, 2006, Friday // 00:00

A new species of plantain, previously unmet on Bulgarian land, was discovered to the south of Bulgaria.

The Mediterranean type of plantain (Plantago) was found dwelling the fields of a village near Krumovgrad, few kilometres away from the Turkish border.

Botanists from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences recorded the finding back in 2004, but only after thorough revision the unique character of the species was confirmed.

The Mediterranean type of plantain roots on serpentine rocks, scientists said.

It will probably find a place in the new edition of Bulgaria's Red Book of Rare Species, academicians announced.
