I have been expecting to receive a much-awaited letter from an old-fashioned friend living in the UK, but my post box is still empty. "Must have been addressed to Sofia, Hungary," I can't help thinking these days. Days when British media repeatedly, in a funny and controversial way, mistakes Bulgaria for Hungary. "45,000 "undesirable" Hungarians and Romanians are expected in the UK when the two countries join the European Union next year," the Independent first wrote. Then came a map in the online edition of Ireland's national broadcaster, highlighting an area that is actually... Hungary! A flattering tribute? A symptom that the country is actually non-existing for that part of Europe? A sign of ignorance? Could be all, but that's is not the most important thing. What really matters is that Bulgarians are looking up upon the prospect of EU entry, as a brand new Eurobarometer poll shows. So I am tempted to draw parallels between Bulgaria and Hungary. And hope that Bulgaria, just Hungary, will return to a culture, of which it has always been a part, and to which, in terms of institutions, it will move closer in the next several months. Unfortunately, Bulgaria can hardly hope to spare itself the troubles that Hungary encountered over the acceptance of its labour force by EU members. What Bulgaria can strive for is meet its new family members with dignity. And gets the place that belongs to it on the map on Europe. Not only figuratively.
