The Wrong to Vote

by Petya Bondokova

How we love democracy! There is nothing like a nation that has suffered the curbs of communism, then turned to the principles of modern society. But we still have to learn how to understand democracy. In democracy, freedom goes with responsibility. It's not enough to be free and have your right to vote and choose lawmakers. You need guarantees that the chosen ones will act responsibly and observe the law. In our Parliament, we have a bunch that is overwhelmed by lazy and arrogant personalities who seem not to give a damn about democracy. Squabbling over their summer leave, lawmakers have confessed on Wednesday that the hall was almost empty anyway - so why put off vacation because of EU duties? If Bulgarian people really want to live in a democratic country, there must be a way to control MPs and keep them at work when they are supposed to be there. Until then, we will have authorities who live on their own terms and don't give any explanation for their actions, even if apparently wrong. Typical for dictatorship, not for democracy.
