MINERAL WATER – BULGARIANS’ SHOPPING BASKET FAVORITE FOR 2001

Purchases in Bulgarian households marked a 4% rise in 2001 over the previous year, inflation for 2001 deducted, data of GfK agency Bulgaria show. Mineral water proved to be Bulgarians’ favorite when doing shopping, with a 18% growth in bought quantities, with light drinks and beer accounting for part of the rise. Experts explain the figure with the increased demand on the market for these products as well as the attractiveness of some offers, e.g. two-liter plastic bottles.

A comparative study of the European chocolate market, conducted by GfK GROUP, puts Bulgaria in one group with Ukraine and Russia in average prices of chocolate per kilogram with EUR 4,80 and an annual consummation of 1,2 kilograms of chocolate per head.

Bulgaria ranks first among Central and Eastern European countries in relative share of expenditures on food, with 58%. It is followed by Romania (57%), Ukraine (53%), Hungary (36%), Slovenia (32%) and the Czech Republic (30%). The 4% growth reflects mainly tendencies of consumer re-orientation to certain packages, products and prices. Survey of BBSS Gallup International shows the growth is below the inflation rate, resulting from the producers’ attempts to respond adequately to the shrunk market with lower prices, promotions and smaller packages.
