Lighter, please

By Ivelina Puhaleva

Four years after leaving - or most specifically being expelled by lashing contraband - one of world's tobacco giants has come back ... and said it will stay. Philip Morris reopened its representation to Bulgaria reviving hopes that the world tobacco leaders have not scrapped the domestic tobacco production as "god forsaken". The lingering privatisation of Bulgartabac, whose fate is to be decided predominantly by the political elite, has not been the bait for Philip Morris to shift eyes to the south of Romania and extend its business here. So far, so good, especially for smokers who will enjoy once again Marlboro and Parliament and quit the need to go and shop duty-free to taste them. What is more important, however, Philip Morris vowed trust in the country's maturity, compared to four years ago, and readiness to enter the single market of the European Union. Welcome back, gentlemen!
