FINANCIAL TIMES ON BULGARIAN ELECTIONS

Politics | June 12, 2001, Tuesday // 00:00

Former king Simeon II has returned in Bulgaria and now campaigning ahead of this week`s general election, article in Financial Times reads. While other former east European royals have made sentimental journeys to their homelands since the fall of Communism, Simeon alone has returned as a political leader. He promises Bulgarians will notice results within 800 days - a figure not chosen arbitrarily. The economic strategy he has announced so far is short on detail - deliberately so, he says. Although Simeon himself is not allowed to stand, opinion polls suggest his National Movement could win the election with 30-40% of the vote. The King`s unwillingness to become involved in political maneuvering has endeared him to the Bulgarian voters but may also prove his main weakness. Simeon may find it difficult to find an administration that lives up to the people`s high expectations, FT concludes.
