The oldest in the world international ballet competition in Varna has met its 2006 contestants under romantically ivy-dressed arches.

This classical ballet contest has opened the gate to fame for names such as Vladimir Vassilev, Natalia Makarova, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Silvie Guillem, and many more.

It has also served as model for other international ballet venues - in Russia, USA, Japan, Finland, and Hungary, organisers from the Culture Ministry and Varna Municipality said.

Participants in this year's 22nd edition come from 32 countries, including 21 Bulgarians. The majority of racing ballet masters from South Korea, Kazakhstan and Turkey.

The official awarding ceremony will be held on July 29 and a day later laureates and finalists will perform at a gala spectacle.
