Thinking Integral

By Ivelina Puhaleva

Thinking in perspective for two different things - parliamentary elections and presidential vote - political forces in Bulgaria have informally opened an electioneering campaign. About three months ahead of a date when Bulgarians will wake up and go to the booths to elect their next President, the parliament opened the battlefield to amend the rules of this vote. The first-vote-passed legal amendment says that names of presidential runners will be written down on a single, integral ballot - slight consolation could be the anticipation that fewer names will be on the paper. On the sidelines, lawmakers from the opposition called for termination of the bad-practice "polling tourism", which defines a legislation gap allowing for Bulgarians from abroad - mainly ethnic Turks - to take the bus and come just to vote here. Whatever the pushes and appeals are for more transparent voting rules, the integral ballot may turn out to be a mere piece of name-list, while integrity in political thinking is still doomed to exile.
