MORE THAN HALF OF BULGARIANS WERE ECONOMICALLY NON-ACTIVE IN DECEMBER

The economically active Bulgarians numbered 3,264,700 Bulgarians (48,1% from the Bulgarian population older than fifteen years old), a survey conducted by the national Statistical Institute shows. In December, 2001 636,500 people have been unemployed. The group of people (aged 15 to 64) who wish to work but can’t find a job has become bigger. 3,527, 200 or 51,9 % of the Bulgarians older than fifteen do not work. The economic activity is higher in cities – 52,9% in comparison with the villages – 37,5%. Survey data show that 39,5% of the employed people worked in the public sector while 60,3% worked in the private sector in December, 2001.
