Pride Parade

By Petya Sabinova

While Bulgarian policemen proudly parade down Sofia streets, celebrating their professional holiday, I take one look at the news and wonder what's there to celebrate. It could be the fact that the force has finally taken a look inwards and picked the rotten apples, like the policeman who teamed up with a crook. Except his colleagues only knew he was a cop after they arrested him, and there really was no going back then. We could also applaud traffic policemen, who are trying to hunt down speeding drivers. We could, if only we were really sure they aren't hunting them down to put some cash in their own pockets. Or we could simply say a big thanks to our officers of the law, because we have gone through a whole week without a report of them beating up a civilian. Phew! What I would like to be able to congratulate them on is a year of transparent, sincere, dedicated service, honestly I really would. But right now the whole institution pays for the misconduct of a few. Investigating the crime within the crime-fighters is key, and it looks like there's some light in the tunnel. Keep it up and next year we could all celebrate!
