The Felix lynx cub that was born in mid-May in Sofia Zoo is starting to explore its environment and win the hearts of visitors and staff alike.

The mountain cat's mother wasn't too eager to let her little one be seen at first and kept it well hidden in the cage. The time has come to grow up, however, and now she looks on, as the cub takes its first steps into the scary yard that will soon become home.

On May 17, the birth of the little mountain cat excited everyone at the zoo, director Ivan Ivanov said, adding that it was immediately "adopted" by astrologist Alena.

Sofia Zoo opened an adoption program for animals in September of 1997, looking for more funding. Celebrities and businesses were especially thrilled, for they got a unique pet and a publicity stunt in return for a small alimony, and many rushed to draw up the adoption papers.

Sofia's zoo is the oldest in the country, dating to the beginning of 1888.
