Football Glory

By Petya Sabinova

As the whole world is caught up in the football fever everyone tries to catch the train for moneyland and milk the world cup for all it's worth. Despite the miserable failure of pantless Goleo, some advertisers still don't seem to get the fact that there are some things football just can't sell. Frankly, I enjoy the game and watch the matches whenever I can, but all the commercials at halftime (and any other time) make me want to smash my TV. From prostate medicine to cornflakes, from beer to motor oil, from teabags to connection-blocks, there are a few products left that still haven't been advertised with a ball on the side. Tampons are still putting up a fight but the way things are going, we'll soon have O.B. come out in a special travel-light-to-Germany package. Even Bulgaria's Nova TV uses a sports-commentator style in its radio spot announcing all the soap operas that disillusioned wives can watch while their husbands are off to planet football. While they were building up the excitement in the beginning all the world-cup parasite ads are plain annoying now. Here's an idea to all the advertisers out there: give us a spot without Ronaldinho in it, it might actually stand out and be remembered.
