State of Emergency Declared in Baghdad

Iraq's government has declared a state of emergency in Baghdad, after the capital's downtown was ripped by violent clashes. The government decided on a curfew from two in the afternoon until six the next morning. Citizens had to hurry home before the curfew took effect, media reported. The Prime Minister's office, where the announcement came from, didn't clarify why the state of emergency was imposed. Police sources have said that armed men have opened fire against an Iraqi-American patrol in the centre of the city. The patrolling officers returned fire, and the area has been cut off.
