Saddam Hussein Cuts Hunger Strike

World | June 23, 2006, Friday // 00:00

Saddam Hussein has discontinued his hunger strike, that he had started in a protest against the murder of one of his main defence lawyers. Hussein and his seven co-accused who had pledged not to eat until their defence team received "international protection", have started munching again. They stopped their strike Thursday evening just hours after they had announced it. The dead body of Khamis al-Obeidi was found dumped in the Iraqi capital Wednesday. Reports said he was killed by "terrorists", but gave no details. Khamis al-Obeidi was the third killed defence lawyer at Saddam's trial. His murder came two days after Iraqi prosecutors demanded a death sentence for former President Saddam Hussein.
