To Serve and Protect

By Petya Sabinova

The fading image of Bulgaria's heaven-like seaside, marred by construction works and reports of unhappy Brits, has been blemished again, this time by our very own officers of the law.
Apparently a "routine check" in discos at seaside resorts has turned into a batter-fest for the frustrated authorities. As usual the Interior Ministry denies, while those whose heads had been cracked are too afraid to lodge official complaints. The situation eerily reminds that of Anguel Dimitrov, dubbed Chorata, beaten to death during an arrest. Then the ministry first denied, later investigated, and finally apologised.
Except an apology won't do. When brute force is used indiscriminately against people who are only guilty of choosing a mutra-frequented resort for their summer vacation, the very foundations of democracy are at stake. Most of us have faced insolent behaviour from policemen, to the point that they are the second most-hated lot in the country, right after politicians. Those who have sworn to serve and protect have become the ultimate threat. Because at least the mobsters only shoot you down if you mess with them.
Interior Minister Petkov should start cracking up on organized crime... by taking a long hard look at his people first.
