Bulgaria's capital Sofia center will be cooled in the hot summer days by the renewed fountains in front of the National Palace of Culture.

Sofia mayor Boyko Borisov and Kevin Starling, "Sofiyska voda" CEO inaugurated more than 40 renovated fountains that haven't been functional for 14 years.

The fountains were constructed in 1981 by engineer Yordan Yorgov, but were closed in 1992 and haven't worked since.

More than EUR 100,000 have been invested in the renovation of the fountains and their monthly maintenance will cost EUR 2,500.

The fountains include 27 water effects and four cascades, and will be lit up in four colours.

There are also six fountains coloured in white, green, red and blue symbolizing the Bulgarian flag and the flag of the European Union.
