A foreigner has attempted suicide at Bulgaria's Golden Sands. Now, excuse my black humour, but whatever her motive might has been, all holidaymakers at the Bulgarian Black Sea have some pretty good reasons to sink into depression. And it's not the noisy construction, bumpy roads, bad food, some stinky toilets. It's even not that bad when it rains. One word - mentality. For most people I've spoken with, the biggest turndown is the attitude of local tradesmen, waiters, taxi drivers and the rest of the "hospitality" employees. Most of them seem to mistake hostility for hospitality, if you ask me. Now that our summer holiday season has already kicked in, officials seem to forget about this issue. All we read and hear about is messy construction. But let's not forget that people on vacation are not just looking for clean roads. They want relaxation, a positive mood and cheerfulness that everyday life lacks. A sincere smile is much better than neatness. That makes professional training for the servicing staff as essential as banning heavy trucks from the resorts. For now, the sulky, rude "hospitality" providers can make a holiday experience a reason for wanting to jump out the window.
