His election with a 98% majority prompted talks of a partisan trade-off. His coming into office offered him "a heavy heritage." His work as Bulgaria's new senior prosecutor gave birth to great expectations both in Sofia and Brussels. But it was mainly thanks to parallels with his predecessor that he drew advantages. 100 days since Boris Velchev took office and just three months before the critical EC report on Bulgaria, the extent of his tasks is more clear than ever. An academic expert in criminal law, who has never previously worked in the judicial system, Velchev vowed to crack down on corruption in the police and judiciary and tackle organized crime. The seven-year tenure of his predecessor Nikola Filchev was often blamed for lack of transparency into the work of the prosecution. And that was what Velchev first took care of, warming his relations with the media. His image of an easy-going man with a wily smile, who always keeps his cool and is not afraid to criticise Brussels experts, helped him a lot. He is sparing of praise and promises and evades to say anything harsh about his predecessor. He is doing a political tightrope act to appear independent. He reacts reservedly to the leftists' initiatives, while working in line with them. Yet his popularity rate is really impressive, with no criticism so far from his archenemies, the rightists. With the summer recess just ahead however, it is more than doubtful that Boris Velchev will accomplish his tasks by September. His old, heavily discredited staff will help him a lot in this.
