Fathers of 20% of Bulgaria's newborns last year were not known, data showed.

A report also said that half of the babies in 2005 were born out of wedlock.

The total number of newborns was 71 640, with a thin majority of boys - 36 478 male youngsters versus 34 597 girls.

An overwhelming majority (52 280) of all babies took their first breath in larger cities. Only 18 795 were born to parents living in rural areas.

The baby figures were published Wednesday, ahead of the June 1 Children's Day.
