Strong Quakes Hit Tonga, Papua Nova Guinea

Strong quakes rattled the South Pacific on Sunday but there were no reports of major damage or injury. A strong earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale hit Papua New Guinea on Sunday but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. The earthquake struck at 03.12 about 39km deep in the island of New Britain. There was no risk of the quake sparking a tsunami. Meanwhile a magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck the Pacific island nation of Tonga. The quake hit at 4:36 p.m. local time today, 145 kilometers north-northeast of the capital Nuku'alofa.
