Lords of Eurometal

By Ivelina Puhaleva

After years of catchy pop and sweetened ballads, a band of hard rock Finns hiding their faces - and identity - was crowned winners in this year's Eurovision song contest. In front of the eyes of flabbergasted Greek hosts, the monster-masked Scandinavians wrote history and showed what Europe's audience has been really fed up with. Whatever official expectations and high-voice discussed favorites were, Lordi seemed to be winners long before the end of the show. People throughout the Continent - as forums spoke out during the last few weeks - were outspokenly thrilled by these new imaged, scandalous but still amusing performers who undisturbed passed by any accusations of preaching Sattanism. Their gloriously over-the-top theatrics and stadium rock anthems earned them a place among the Eurovision elite. Tracking down a new alley of favorites, Lordi's crowning winners was in a way a scream of protest against the Orthodox development of this song contest, much blamed for being too political in selecting the finalists. Therefore, despite trying to pick up singers alike this or the other year's winners, each country, including Bulgaria, should look up for the difference and the uniqueness of its performance - so, good work, Helsinki, and see you next year!
