65% SUPPORT POSTPONING RULING MOVEMENT CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY

65% of the Bulgarians define as “right” the decision to postpone the constituent assembly of the Simeon II National Movement, data from a telephone poll, conducted by the sociological agency MBMD show. According to 14% of the interviewed, the Constituent Assembly of the party should not have been postponed. The poll data show that 55% were acquainted with the statement of the prime minister and leader of the movement to be constituted as a party during the forum of the Simeon II National Movement on January 26. 66% think that Simeon Saxe-Coburg should not be leader of the movement, 13# think that he should be both leader of the movement and prime minister. 42% said that after the prime minister’s statement there will be changes in the cabinet, 33% said the statement will not influence he government.

On January 26, the constituent assembly of the party Simeon II National Movement was postponed and rescheduled for April 6, 2002. Simeon Saxe-Coburg, chairman of the movement’s council, explained that his commitment to dedicate all his time and efforts to his tasks as Bulgaria's prime minister stops him from taking the honorable position of a party leader. According to him the final adoption of the proposed documents is impossible. He recommended that some of the numerous proposals concerning the party be taken into account in drawing up its statute. He said he wished the registered party members would be many, underlining that every Bulgarian citizen can join the party. The draft documents of the party describe it as conservative, liberal, socially and nationally orientated party. About 700 people gathered for the assembly on January 26, about 150 of them were invited personally by Simeon Saxe-Coburg. The forum was to elect leadership, adopt the party’s statute and declaration on the party’s values.
