Charming brunette Mariana Popova from Bulgaria failed to qualify for the Eurovision final to take place Saturday.

Popova's sensual ballade "Let me Cry" failed to capture the audience in Bulgaria's second unsuccessful appearance at the song contest.

The ten countries that did make it to the final are Russia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Lithuania, Finland, Ukraine, Ireland, Sweden, Turkey and Armenia.

Fourteen more songs already await at the final, and Saturday promises to be quite a show - 3 hours 5 minutes in lenght.

The 2006 edition of Eurovision didn't bore its audience and viewers for there were many surprises. Finland's Lordi shocked with "Hard Rock Hallelujah", a melodic hard rock piece that certainly won't be forgotten soon. Hoping to pave the way for tougher stuff in the contest, Lordi managed to impress with their outfits as well - they looked as something inspired by the orcs in Lord of the Rings, and viewers awarded them with a spot on Saturday.

Lithuania came out with quite a high self esteem, with a song titled "We are the Winners", that told everyone that they were the winners of Eurovision and urged people to "vote, vote, vote." The song, performed by a pleiad of the country's brightest stars had never been played anywhere else before the contest. Apparently Lithuanians weren't too far away from the truth for they too grabbed one of the 10 passes to the final.

A special landmark was reached this year - the 1,000th Eurovision song, which will by chance, was sung by Ireland, the country that has won by far the most Eurovision titles - seven.

Hosts Sakis Rouvas and Maria Menounos had the honour of leading the ceremony, and two Greek Olymipc gold winners turned the huge sand clock that counted the 10 minutes for voting.

Despite expectations of a surprising show by eccentric singer Azis who performed the back-vocals in Popova's song, the otherwise flamboyant transvestite had chosen a simple outfit, in an attempt not to steal Popova's thunder. The Bulgarian diva who shimmered in a tight golden dress on Thursday won the national leg on March 13 after sweeping 24.05% of the total votes cast, or some 15,000 SMS votes and 4,700 phone calls.

Organisers from the Athens Indoor Hall boasted that more than 2,000 journalists are accredited to the two-day event from all over the world, making it comparable to international sporting events such as the Olympics.
