Long, dark and stinking - high-level corruption in Bulgaria has been like a tunnel, where you roll year by year with no light ahead. But in recent years pressure from the EU really seems to has inspired some more decisive measures. We have to appreciate the fact that Europe's ways are different from the Balkan political traditions, and western societies are much less tolerant to trickster politicians. We are trying to learn form that, apparently. After recent checks, it has emerged that the mayor of Sliven might have abused his power, the head of the Sheynovo hospital probably sold stem cells abroad, and the manager of Sofia's central heating used budget money to buy himself sauna and a Jacuzzi. If anyone ever doubted it - we really, really, really need urgent measures against corruption, and it's not just EU bureaucracy! But there is something even more important than official efforts against the problem. It's the Bulgarian people who should change their attitude, and instead of assuming the role of murmuring bystanders, expecting the government to do all the work, to assume some responsibility. We lash corrupt officials, and in the same time bribe road policemen to dodge sanctions, and buy liquor and candy for administrators or doctors. Yes, there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel. If we walk towards it, instead of waiting for someone to drag us that way, we would reach it sooner.
