Beating EU Hangover

By Milena Hristova

A bottle of champagne in Strasbourg and trill-like, full-of-excitement speeches in Sofia. This is how dizzy Bulgarian politicians from the ruling majority hailed the report of the European Commission on May 16. Only to wake up with a hangover on the next morning. Because no matter how hard they tried to see beyond the horizon of today's Bulgaria, they could, in the best case, only see beyond the lexical civilities of the Brussels officials. What was enthusiastically interpreted as the best thing we could ever get (the report), now looked like a failure on behalf of the current authorities. The EU train was rolling but now appeared to have a brake; an eventual decoupling of Sofia and Bucharest in the autumn - more than humiliating. If I prove wrong in assuming these epiphanies have sobered up local politicians, that will only prove right my claim of nearly fatal miscommunication between Sofia and Brussels. What Bulgarians know about the EU is only political palaver, what the EU knows about Bulgaria is murders and corruption. And now Bulgaria has a few months to catch up for the lost time and unveil its assets. Blame it on miscommunication and politicians' intoxication, but they have been hidden for too long! Won't somebody give Mr Stanishev a hangover pill?
