Fruits of (No) Passion

Bulgarians, it turns out, neglect finer cuisine in favor of more filling and solid food like bread and potatoes. And no wonder. With an average monthly income of EUR 93 per capita, truffles and pralines are out of the question. Those who had ever visited a Bulgarian in their home know that we rarely let our guests leave the table with their stomachs empty. If anything, we overfeed them, but that's just a peculiar trait of our hospitality. Those who are Bulgarians, however, also know that we prepare for our guests heartily, even if it means living off breadcrumbs for the rest of the week.
On the eve of an EC monitoring report, surveys show that unlike other EU members, diversity on the dinner table is not a priority for Bulgarians. The priority now is rather having something, anything, on the table. And if it is true that the way to a man's heart goes through his stomach, then no wonder half of Bulgaria's men try to beat erectile dysfunction. Potatoes and bread are way down the passion food ladder, I've heard.
