Over the last few months Bulgaria became a star in the press - both in Europe and in the US. It was not only our future membership in the European Union, crime and corruption that attracted the attention of the foreign media, but also the strengthening of Sofia-Washington relations and even some of Bulgaria's successful footballers. Now, I read that British Sunday Telegraph has also decided to pay some attention to our country! Under the title "Europe's 'Wild East' is ready to go West" the newspaper tells about the hardships, prospects and expectations of Bulgaria's people in view of the country's EU membership. "Bulgaria is desperate to follow Poland, the Czech Republic, Latvia and the other five east European nations that joined the EU in 2004"... Well aren't these words too strong? Most of the foreign reports present Bulgaria as a country ruled by crime, murders, corruption, one would even say there is no sun shining in Bulgaria. Once again, you will have to take my words for granted - we do have sunshine and many other things as well. Because the foreigners get to hear about our country, which if I may say, is very beautiful, only when someone is killed or when EU officials are reproaching us. That is too sad, right? What remains in the dark is that this "Wild, Wild East" isn't that wild, as it has a history richer that most of the civilized European countries...
