Crime | May 12, 2006, Friday // 00:00

A Bulgarian woman who was wanted for committing a brutal murder was captured in Madrid, media reported.

Six years ago Tanya Dimitrova had killed a woman from the northern Bulgarian village of Lilyache to rob her of a mobile phone and golden jewelry worth about EUR 750. Dimitrova smashed her victim's head with a rock, hitting her 15 times and she stabbed her in the throat 12 times with a knife.

Bulgarian police don't know when the woman deserted Bulgaria and they believe that she hid in several other Eastern European countries. Dimitrova is wanted worldwide since the beginning of 2006 when Bulgarian authorities contacted Interpol.

The woman was arrested in an apartment in Madrid's suburb Moralzarzal. She had applied for temporary Spanish residence, together with her parents.

Dimitrova faces from 15 years to life in prison.
