Who's Your Daddy?

by Petya Bondokova

The good side to a disappointment is that you learn a lesson. In Bulgaria's case with EU, hopefully we've learned that advantages come in return for reasonable efforts. The bloc is not our daddy. When all of us were kids, it was enough to make a sad face to make dad provide extra pocket money, right? But grownups rarely get anything for free. And the positive side of the SAPARD scam scandal is that, if sanctioned, the Bulgarian society will accept the idea that EU membership will require quite an effort. It's not enough to receive funding - you need to have a perfectly functioning system for making the investments, skilled administrators and potential beneficiaries who are well informed about how to apply. Bulgaria ended up with a population that doesn't have a clue on how to get the cash and invest it, and with officials who are suspected of misusing the money. If the EU should withdraw funds, it would not be a surprise. Furthermore, it could be for the better. If it teaches us that good results take hard work, then we are closer to being a grownup nation.
