Choose the Reading Life

By Ivelina Puhaleva

Reading and literacy has always been an indicator of civilisation - as if you can swim in an ocean of knowledge, have your lifetime compass right and open widely new windows to the world. If we are to choose few words to summarise this spring in Bulgaria, "books" and "reading" will be in the Top 5. Week after week initiatives on promoting reading and buying books have been growing in number with the speed of an avalanche. Publishers seem to have managed to awaken the political ear to their problems sprouting from both the market and the audience itself. Bulgarian children have largely lost interest to literature shifting eyes to the dynamics of the www-cosmos. And winning their interest back is not an easy task - parents, teachers, and politicians admitted. But the efforts are worth, as every page turned on is a step nearer to a healthier and better educated individual - one President, one PM, a Professor, or even a Nobel Laureate. Because children of Bulgaria deserve to know how beautiful the world of fairytales and science fiction is and devour it at the best possible level of quality. So good luck, you all reader-promoters, thinking of the future of Bulgaria!
