Work on fifty short-term projects will continue this year in the framework of the Working Table on Democratisation and Human Rights under the Stability Pact, Deutsche Welle announced. A total of EUR 50 M have been released for the projects by the donor countries.

Bulgaria is to take part in eight regional projects on the establishment of free and independent media in the Balkans. The initiatives include Deutsche Welle project for retraining and qualification courses of journalists from private media in the Balkan countries. EUR 5,800,000 will be granted for funding the projects. The working group on the media in Bulgaria will continue its activities for encouraging independent on-line media in Southeastern Europe in 2002.

EUR 14 M has been earmarked by the Stability Pact for projects on youth and education problems in Bulgaria. The International Cooperation Institute with the German Free Universities Union will continue its work on developing the network of language and professional training.

A total of EUR 2 M has been released for human rights protection projects. The money will primarily be used for funding activities under the project “Connecting differences”. Holland, Greece and Great Britain are to boost cooperation among MPs in the Balkans by funding the project.
