As Bulgaria is getting ready to greet Gergyovden (St. George's Day) on Saturday and lamb is selling faster than ever, one piece of news managed to slide unnoticed by most. It turns out the army parade for Valour Day, which is also celebrated on May 6, will cost EUR 150,000. All sorts of jets, choppers and tanks will impress Sofia citizens, and the parade promises to be exceptional, various army chiefs boast. It's all good, seeing all these machines would probably be the thrill of a lifetime for many, but did they really need to spend so much on it? After all, there are thousands of people in Bulgaria who live on less than EUR 60 a month, and who won't be able to afford the traditional lamb for Gergyovden. Education, healthcare and social services are struggling, but the state's decision-makers insist on spending thousands just to look flashy. And it's not just the Army Day parade, either. A week before was the NATO meeting that gulped down over EUR 1 M. A couple of weeks after is the Day of Bulgarian Education, Culture and Slavic Letters, and rumours of a great parade coming up are already surfacing. Good thing that June isn't so full of national holidays and summits, then.
