Sofia police demolished an illegal Roma ghetto on Tuesday, sparking mixed feelings in many. "We are here to eat the bread," one of the women who lived in those shacks with her numerous children shared. They had come to the capital in search of a better life, only to end up rummaging in the local trash cans, illegally settling on someone else's property. Bulgaria's government is in a deadlock. When they offer to build blocks for the Roma, angry neighbors jump up, asking why they'd get it all for free when they'd never worked a day in their life. If someone offers alternatives in the countryside, the Roma refuse to leave Sofia, "where the bread is." Both sides have their arguments, and both are right for themselves. Life is hard in the smaller villages, but the sight of communal apartments' woodworks torn down to make a fire is even harder to take. Until something is done to integrate Roma in society, police will be driving them away and they'd simply settle down the road. Bulgaria is about to chair the Decade of Roma Inclusion and plans to spend EUR 630 M on various Roma integration programs - a good step forward, but is it enough?
