You are in. No, you are out. That's what we have been listening to over the last few weeks. Media reports and Bulgarian politicians are positive: We are about to join the European Union as planned January 1, 2007. Still, the reserved comments of EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn make me doubt that bright future. I surely don't have much experience in politics and diplomacy but I know that when you have been twice reproached for failing to execute your tasks, it is certain that you really are doing something wrong! Rehn twice "chewed us up" in one month: Bulgaria is failing to tackle crime and fight corruption, but still, our ministers and some of the EU commissioners are expecting me to believe that we are going to become a full member in about ten months. That raises the question: what is the EU membership for Bulgaria? Ok, so you say we are in, but as I see it Bulgaria, widely described as one of the laggards of Eastern Europe, is to join the bloc only because they took pity on us. Is this what we really want - to join the union at any price? I doubt it. I think that what we are all after is a tangible reform.
