The passions surrounding the annual Sofia Jazz+ Festival peaked Wednesday evening after Bulgaria's capital city was conquered by flamenco rhythms.
Sofia enjoyed the heated performance of Las Migas, a women flamenco group founded in Barcelona in 2003. These four ladies break all the rules of traditional flamenco: Silvia Perez Cruz, singer and saxofonist, and Isabelle Laudenbach, Marta Robles Crespo, guitar players, and Lisa Bause, violinist and accordeonist.
Their repertory consist of flamenco "palos" like tangos, bulerias, rumbas, malaguenas, tanguillos, "cancion por bulerias", copla, some their own composition, some composed by other musicians specially for them, and some traditional tunes, but everything full of magic, colour and passion.
After the passionate ladies, guitarist Gerardo Nunez hit the stage, joined by magnificent dancer Carmen Cortes.
Nunez is a world famous flamenco player who has collaborated with some of the genre's biggest artists over the years. During the 80s he started experimenting with jazz and releases the highly acclaimed albums El gallo azul, Flamencos en Nueva York and Calima.
