Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets as a demonstration in the Argentine capital descended into violence Saturday. Public outrage against a deep economic crisis triggered renewed protests Friday as unemployed Argentines blocked highways. The protest marked the first nationwide demonstration against Duhalde's three-week-old government. Since taking office January 2, Duhalde has devalued the peso by more than 30 percent and further tightened a widely despised banking freeze that has locked most Argentines' savings into bank accounts.
