Easter Plea

Not everyday is Easter, people in Bulgaria always say when someone wants good things to happen to them constantly. Things like scoring three times in one football game, or landing a Royal Flush five deals in a row. Sunday is the Orthodox Easter, however, and one can't help but hope for miracles.
One thing I've been long hoping for is better traffic control in Sofia. When news like today's account of a 9-year-old who was run over right in front of school breaks out, I first curse at the insolent driver, but then my anger turns to the police. One of the main reasons why drivers in Sofia are so obnoxious and disregard the rules so blatantly is that authorities let them get away with it so often. Yeah, we've all heard the tales of the cameras that now adorn crucial traffic lights but this is far from enough. Every day I wait in line at Sofia's Dragan Tsankov Boulevard and see at least five cars whiz past me from the wrong lane, blocking the drivers who actually adhere to the rules. Just meters away, literally around the corner, there is a police car with an officer out on the road. Now he's hoping to catch someone speeding - and doing it at a section where it is virtually impossible to gather enough speed. If he would just move 20 meters down, he could collect enough fines in a day to cover his whole unit's monthly wage. A week there and he would have taught a lesson to all the wisecracks.
For some reason policemen just refuse to monitor that section of the road, even if everyone knows that thousands of violations happen there daily. It seems that it's too much of a hustle for them - they'd actually have to work. And they might actually make a driver or two think twice before bending the rules again.
So here's my Easter plea - as a driver, and a pedestrian: traffic policemen, start doing your job at last!
