JAN.-NOV. 2001 CURRENT ACCOUNT DEFICIT MARKS AN INCREASE

Current account deficit for January-November 2001 marked an increase of USD 206 M over 2000 and reached USD 771.5 M, or 5.7 % of GDP, the Bulgarian National Bank, announced. In 2000 current account deficit stood at USD 565.5 M and accounted for 4.7% of GDP. In November Bulgaria's trade deficit stood at USD 183.9 M, or USD 93.3 M up from November 2000 deficit of USD 90.5 M. Bulgaria has a trade deficit for January-November 2001 as well – USD 1,425.3 M or 10.6% of the GDP. This is an increase of USD 399.7 M in comparison with the same period in 2000, when it stood at USD 1,025.6 M or 8.6 per cent of the GDP. The central bank's foreign exchange reserves increased by USD 321.7 M, against an increase of USD 42.3 M for the same month last year.
