BULGARIA AGAINST MARTIAL LAW IN SKOPIE

Business | June 8, 2001, Friday // 00:00

PM Ivan Kostov convened an emergency sitting of the Security Council because of the complication of the crisis in Macedonia. Bulgarian Minister of Defense, Boiko Noev, commented that the introduction of martial law in Macedonia was not a solution of the problem. He denied the claim that Skopje had requested arms during the past few days. Declaration of the state of war will confirm the incapability of Macedonian government to handle the conflict in the country. This could cause economic crisis and civil war in Macedonia. From Bulgaria and Macedonia we expect assistance for a political settlement of the conflict, warned Parliamentary State Secretary of the Defense Ministry of Germany, Brigite Schulte. Otherwise, both countries shall lose chances to be admitted to NATO and EU structures.
