Bearing the Brunt

By Ivelina Puhaleva

The scandalous deal between the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry and Israeli lobbyist Shimon Sheves has ended like a saga of pre-destined final credits. After the very announcement of the public procurement procedure many experts voiced amazement at the quite late moment of such step. Less than a month ahead of a crucial EC report, the government has matured to the idea of hiring EU lobby services on behalf of Bulgaria's timely accession. Despite numerous cracks along the way, the diplomacy institution stuck to the appropriateness and timeliness of its decision. However, things changed overnight when media revealed Sheves was convicted of serious financial crimes and corruption. And the credits changed! The Foreign Ministry announced it would punish the legal department director "for not paying enough attention" in the process of negotiating the deal. Poor diplomats! As if we do not know the director's signature under the documents is just the first one in a series of coordination and co-signing up to the highest rank? So, please, Mr. Bulgarian Minister, do not play the tune of lowest - equal to none - responsibility.
