N-PLANT UNITS CLOSURE WILL LEAD TO 10% DECREASE IN BG ENERGY CAPACITY

The closure of the third and fourth units of the Nuclear Power Plant Kozloduy will lead to chain raise in the prices of the electricity producers in Bulgaria, Stefan Vodenicharov, chairman of the Kozloduy Protection National Committee said. According to him, in case that the units are closed, Bulgaria’s energy system will have 10% less than the currently available capacity. Bulgaria heavily depends on its nuclear power supply. Taking into account the current state of the economy in the country, it will be disastrous for the energy sector to close the 4 reactors of Kozloduy.

The National Committee on the N-plant protection declared that it is against the closure in a special letter to the Bulgarian President, Prime Minister and Parliamentary Speaker. The committee insists "on reviewing the conditions for earlier than envisaged closure of first and second and afterwards third and fourth units of the nuclear plant."

Third and fourth units of the N-plant Kozloduy have been constantly modernized during the passed ten years and are currently in the same condition as similar units in other European countries, Krassimira Ilieva, chairman of the Bulgarian Nuclear Association. According to her, this fact gives sufficient grounds to Bulgaria to protect their existence.

“Bulgaria has not yet prepared a national strategy on the closure of the third and fourth units of the Nuclear Power Plant Kozloduy, “ Bulgaria’s Chief Negotiator with the European Union Meglena Kuneva announced. Kuneva explained that a report on the development of Bulgaria’s energy sector is being prepared. The report will include the national position on the terms for the decommissioning of third and fourth Kozloduy units. Kuneva explained that in a memorandum signed in 1999, the term for the closure of the units is between 2006 and 2008.
