The European Union should set up a blacklist of corrupt governments to prevent development aid being diverted from its intended recipients, EU lawmakers agreed.

The MEPs called for tighter measures in fight against corruption and more effective aid from the European Union for the developing countries.

Underlining that losses from corruption in Africa annually reach 25% of the GDP, MEPs urged all EU members to implemented the UN and Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development conventions for corruption.

They also called for the bloc to set up an international system of blacklisting to prevent banks from lending large sums of money to corrupt regimes or individuals representing a government.

In the report by Dutch Member of European Parliament Margrietus Van den Berg, EP also demanded more transparency in the massive development budget of the EU, the biggest provider of aid in the world.
