We, the Editorial Staff of Sofia News Agency, express our indignation at the attack on the life of our colleague Vassil Ivanov from Nova TV and condemn the attempt to stifle the voice of free speech in Bulgaria. What Bulgarian journalists saw on Thursday was indicative of the failure of the state to come to grips with the problems and an irrefutable proof that the quest for freedom of the speech is far from over. The bomb explosion in front of the flat of the top crime reporter brought into focus investigative journalism and the nagging suspicion that authorities, often the target of Vassil's investigations, could be among the suspected masterminds of this brutal act. Now the question we should answer is not "Who's next?", but rather "What's next?" The good news is that journalists from all Bulgarian media united in condemning the assassination attempt, turning their backs on rivalry. Now it is clearer than ever that people can trust the morale of the journalists more than that of politicians, who failed to win a single conviction against the criminals over the last sixteen years. Now it is more urgent that ever that we follow closely the work of the Interior Ministry and bear it responsible for what follows. Because we know that freedom of the speech is not cheap. But it is only in countries, far from democracy, that journalists pay with their lives.
