The prepared anti-AIDS vaccine will be initially produced in Bulgaria, the director of the National Centre for Contagious and Parasitic Diseases Bogdan Petrunov revealed.

Earlier in the week Italian Professor Vittorio Colizzi, one of the founders of AIDS, came in Sofia to open work with Bulgarian scientists on the making of an anti-AIDS medicine.

The visit of Professor Vittorio Colizzi is very important for Bulgaria Petrunov pointed out. He also explained that the vaccine will be developed for treatment of small children and have a cumulative effect on tuberculosis as well. A Bulgarian anti-tuberculosis medicine will be used as basis for the new drug.

Researchers plan to open work within a year. The new laboratory to shelter the scientific studies will be at the approximate cost of EUR 3 M, the Italian virusologist said.

Professor Colizzi is one of the most eminent HIV/AIDS researchers in Europe. He directs the Immunochemical and Molecular Pathology laboratory in the biology department of Tor Vergata University in Rome.

With his French colleague Luc Montagnier he has participated in many conferences, particularly in Africa, to combat the propagation of HIV.

The two renowned AIDS researchers are authors of a report investigating the causes for a massive HIV outbreak in a Benghazi hospital. It firmly points at the poor hygiene in the hospital as a cause stripping the guilt off the shoulders of five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor accused of deliberately infecting more than 400 Libyan children.
