A new page in history was turned over when Sergey Stanishev stepped into a police office - the first Bulgarian prime minister ever to make such a step, policemen admitted in amazement. Not less amazed left the room the young premier who apparently did not expect to face the misery and bareness of that workplace. Within such a routine visit it was made clear that the system of the Interior Ministry fights on two battlefields every single day - the one on the streets and the other on the inside. Efficient work counts on efficacious equipment, heart-and-soul workability and decent conditions at work - the latter is re-printed in numerous international documents. The system would work perfectly, provided that all these factors are at hand - but they are not, and it is now evident why. The impotence of police to inspire proper respect in the society becomes even more on display after a glimpse on Sofia's highways and thoroughfares. Every second driver makes contribution to massive violation of traffic rules acting as if he or she is the only one on the road. Newest video surveillance is a scream in the dark against this - in many cases lethal - practice until a workable system for collecting heavy fines is finally enforced. Applicable for crazy-driving policemen as well!
