Bulgaria's police rescued a Greek businessman, who was kidnapped after coming to Bulgaria to meet a business partner.

The 59-year-old Greek businessman P.D. came to Bulgaria on March 25 to talk with his partner-to-be Kostadin V. The two met on March 25 in the southern city Stara Zagora. A day later the two businessmen left for Kardzhali, where they met another two Bulgarians. The three Bulgarians took P.D. to an apartment in the city, where they held him captive four days.

The kidnappers called for a ransom of EUR 80,000. After they were told that the family of the Greek businessman could not collect the wanted sum they asked for EUR 20,000. The abductors told the family of the Greek businessman that he has been kidnapped along with his Bulgarian counterpart. The Greek businessman was released by the abductors on March 28.

The Greek citizen has not been physically molested, Bulgarian police announced at a special press conference. The kidnappers were arrested March 29 to 31. No further details were revealed for the police operation. It was only announced that the victim is already in his native country and that charges have been brought against his kidnappers.

Last year a Briton has held captive for a few days in a cottage near Sofia. He was also lured to come to Bulgaria to a buy a house and then abducted by three men. The kidnappers contacted his family in the UK and demanded a ransom of GBP 44,000 to release him. During the police raid for the rescue of the Briton one kidnapper was killed and the other two were arrested.
