Planet Gabrovo Turns 30 on April Fool's Day

A planet, named after the Bulgarian town of Gabrovo, famous for its residents' legendary sense of humour, marks thirty years since its discovery.

Interestingly, the planet was first detected by the Russian astronaut Nikolay Chernih on April 1 Fool's day on 1976.

Five years later the US Minor Planet Centre officially recognized planet Gabrovo, which enters the list of the solar system, tagged No 2206 spot.

In 1981 the municipality of Gabrovo in advance declared for honourary citizen the man who first steps on the small planet.

The enthusiasts will have to travel no less than three years before they reach the planet.

The town of Gabrovo, located some 220 km north-east from the city of Sofia, is known as the biggest kingdom of laughter on earth. It has seen the birth of many famous inventions - the fashion of narrow trousers and short skirts, one-stotinka coin.

And this is no big surprise since the inhabitants of Gabrovo are famous for their unique sense of humour! These are the people who clip the tails of their cats to keep the room warmer and stop their watches at night to save hard wear on the cog-wheels.

The town also houses the famous House of Humor and Satire, where thousands of world famous humorists from across the world gather during the biennial Festival of Humor and Satire.

"Laughter has remained the most stable currency of all," the late Radoi Ralin, famous Bulgarian writer and great friend of Gabrovo, wrote, affirming Gabrovtsi belief that "the world lasts because it laughs".
