Holy Carrot!

by Petya Bondokova

Recently I have been associating the EU mainly with strict monitoring over our judiciary, crime fight, state administration and other "serious stuff." A fresh campaign came to remind us, however, that nothing is more important than good health. So isn't it smart to pay for promoting carrot juice and its importance to physical wellbeing? As ridiculous as it sounded to me at first, now I am appreciating the effort to teach people about products that can keep them healthy. Having in mind Bulgaria's demographic crisis and shaky healthcare system, carrot nectar could help the population big time. But (as it often happens in editorials) there is a small problem. Many Bulgarians are so poor that they couldn't care less about carrots, nuts, spinach, soy, seafood, olive oil, vitamins, antioxidants, carotene, fibres...This whole carrot thing reminded me about yoghurt. The unique Bulgarian product has been preferred lately in its low-fat forms, but not for dietary reasons. Sadly, for many Bulgarians 0.30 euro is too much for whole-milk. Maybe that was what we should have cared about a little more.
