While Bulgarian police launch sudden raids in discos to round up tipsy underage visitors, it turns out that the bigger problem lies on the streets, literally. Children bet their life for peanuts, just to prove their manliness, and it takes taxi drivers calling the media for anyone to notice. Sooner or later, someone will get hurt and then we'd act all concerned and scream justice. The Interior Ministry will come up with a new law, probably banning children from crossing the street without an adult present, and we'd all be supposed to sigh with relief. It's a tested system. A deadly stampede in a disco led to a law banning youngsters from night-time venues, a tragic bus crash introduced regulations for school trips, and a grotesque and violent murder of two teenagers sparked the sudden raids and talks of a curfew. In the meantime the brutal rapists and murderers are still on the loose, trials against those who took the lives of children drag on for years without an end and children lie on the streets in search of a new adrenaline rush. Their parents will soon storm us with demands of a new tragedy-induced law from the government. That they would do in a heartbeat, instead of pausing to think that maybe they should have known why their son comes all scruffy back home in the evening, why he suddenly has twice as much cash, or where he has spent all his allowance in one day.
