"Garpastum," a 2005 Russian film by Alexei German Jr., won the big prize of the Sofia Film Fest this weekend.

The makers of the film had the honour of receiving the award from Sir Alan Parker. The creator of "Midnight Express," "Evita," and "Angel Heart" was the top guest to this year's edition of the world festival.

Several Bulgarian productions gained distinction.

Boginya Naydenova's "Kaloyan and Sonya" landed the promising debut award by an international jury.

Two prizes went to "Lady Z", a tragic comedy directed by Georgi Dyulgerov. The film won the FIPRESSI recognition of international film journalists, and the Kodak prize for best Bulgarian movie.

The Jameson Award for best Bulgarian short film went to a cartoon - "Black and White" directed by Andrey Tsvetkov.

"Gravehopping" by Slovenian Jan Cvitkovic was named Best Balkan Film.

Saturday nights' awarding was the culmination of a ten-day movie marathon, oddering more than 180 productions from across the world to the Bulgarian auduience.

Among the guests were dozens of big names from the world filmmaking guild.
